CMC(Catholic Medical Center) operates 8 affiliated hospitals and has the largest medical network in Korea, serving over 1.5 million patients. (Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital, Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital, Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, and Daejeon St. Mary’s Hospital)
As the Fourth Industrial Revolution unfolds, CMC has proactively engaged in a comprehensive digital transformation, spearheaded by Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, to convert vast amounts of medical data into high-quality datasets, driving advancements in medical technology.
Since 2019, CMC has implemented an integrated CDW(Clinical Data Warehouse) to utilize EMR data from our eight hospitals for research purposes. By providing this platform to researchers, we have facilitated numerous research projects, marking significant achievements.
Furthermore, starting in 2020, we began the digital transformation of unstructured medical data and have been providing services under the CMC EDP (Enterprise Data Platform) since 2021. This has significantly contributed to medical technology advancements through AI. The types of unstructured data currently serviced in CMC EDP includes PACS images, CDIS images, digital pathology images, and NGS result files (TSV). These data are de-identified but retain important metadata and are provided to researchers in FHIR format for research purposes.
In the future, we are preparing to establish a digital clinical trial center to conduct various empirical and clinical validations using this vast medical data. Moreover, we aim to build strong collaborative relationships with industry to develop medical technology.

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital(SNUBH) was established in 2003 with the goal of becoming a digital hospital. By advancing its medical information systems and improving information accessibility, the hospital has enhanced the quality of its medical services. However, with the increase in large-scale information leakage incidents and the sophistication of security threats, the importance of information security and personal data protection has become more pronounced. The hospital has obtained information security certifications according to international standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 27701, ensuring the reliability of its information protection. Additionally, SNUBH has established a dedicated information security organization and a systematic management system to continuously improve its security levels. Through various security measures such as network separation within the hospital, mobile device security, and remote access control, SNUBH responds to external demands for access to medical information and security threats. The hospital maintains the confidentiality of patient information and medical records through its information security management system, consistently emphasizing the importance of information security, and strives to provide a safe medical environment

Dr. Cha is the head of data at the Cancer Big Data Center, National Cancer Center, Korea. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the Department of Electronic Computer Science, Chungbuk National University. He previously worked for the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is currently working for the Cancer Big Data Center and AI Business Team at the National Cancer Center.
Dr. Cha’s research interests and activities include the use of clinical data governance, various analytic methods of clinical data, primarily specialized in cancer big data, and the use of artificial intelligence data. His activities establish contributions in various fields across the government using various data platforms along with EMR, EHR and PHR.

Since 2008, CMC (Catholic Medical Center) has been managing and operating an integrated EMR system for eight affiliated hospitals.
On October 30, 2019 CMC announced 41 task items in 7 areas at the Digital Transformation Vision Declaration Ceremony, and declared to lead the medical field in the 4th industrial revolution era using 15 million patient data from 8 hospitals under CMC with standardized and integrated infrastructure. Regarding Big Data platform which is the core of the CMC Digital Transformation vision, CMC nU CDW based on structured data of 8 CMC hospitals, was established in November 2019, and CMC nU EDP (Enterprise Data Platform) based on unstructured data was established in 2021 to make an environment using structured and unstructured data to improve research and medical quality.
CMC is working to build a CDSS (Clinical Decision Support System) and improve patient safety and medical quality by linking the results of various big data research and AI research with the EMR platform using an integrated big data platform.
